First meeting of the Joint Working Group on Water

The India-Tanzania Joint Working Group on Water met in Dar es Salaam from 15-17 May 2019. The Indian delegation was led by Ms. T. Rajeswari, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India. The Tanzanian side was led by Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water, Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. On the sidelines of the Joint Working Group meeting, the Indian delegation held a technical interaction with the Water Development & Management Institute and visited sites of water projects taken up under cooperation between the two countries.

Areas of technical cooperation and capacity building identified between the two sides are as follows:

i. Integrated water resource management;

ii. Investigation and preparation of detailed project report of water resources development projects;

iii. Application of GIS and remote sensing in water resource management;

iv. Acquifer mapping and ground water assessment and management;

v. Water harvesting/conservation and artificial recharge to ground water.

vi. Project management and resource planning;

viii. Exchanges with the Rajiv Gandhi National Ground Water Training and Research Institute, Raipur, India and National Water Academy, Pune, India in the areas identified for technical cooperation;

The Working Group appreciated the extensive water supply projects being executed in Tanzania with the Indian support across Tanzania as well as technical training facilities provided under Government of India scholarships.The next meeting of the JWG will be held in India on mutually convenient dates.
