The Indian education system has long been known for quality education at a low cost of study and living, which makes India an attractive destination for international students. Students in India receive internationally recognised qualifications.
Indian institutions offer a wide range of general and specialised courses that are relevant to the needs of developing and developed countries. Indian qualifications are of a high standard, and Indian researchers, academics and software professionals are sought after around the world.
Since the academic session 2001–02, foreign nationals and Indian students studying abroad have been admitted to undergraduate engineering programmes in Centrally Funded Institutions (CFIs) under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme. From the academic year 2010–11, the Ministry of Education (then the Ministry of Human Resource Development), Government of India, has entrusted the coordination of DASA admissions to NIT Karnataka, Surathkal.
DASA scholarship scheme
A scholarship scheme to attract bright candidates from abroad was introduced in all participating institutes from the academic year 2011–12. It gives a 25% tuition fee waiver in the first year to the top two candidates (in order of merit by SAT score) admitted to each participating institute. The waiver is reimbursed after the admission process is over and applies to the first year only.
